I was fortunate enough to receive a gift card to the Boar’s Head Inn for my retirement and decided to use the card for a balloon ride. My daughter and I couldn’t have picked a more perfect day for our flight. Although we had to reschedule a few times because of Virginia’s ever-changing weather we finally had lift off on October 21st. We were joined by a adventurous couple from Williamsburg, who were just as excited as my daughter and I about our first flight. The trees had begun to change colors and the sights were incredible. Rick, our pilot, has 40 years of flying experience and although he and the crew were all business in the inflation of the balloon once we were floating he relaxed and pointed out sights along the way. He told us of the years of experience he had and we are fortunate to have such a skilled pilot in the Charlottesville area. Rick explained everything to the four of us and was pleased that we had an extra long flight due to favorable winds. We felt safe and comfortable with Rick as our pilot, and although I have a tendency to have trouble with height flying in a balloon is nothing like looking down from a high place. The crew, who chased us are experienced and made our landing and return to the Boar’s Head Inn delightful. The crew took several pictures of us before during and after the flight. We received a CD of the pictures while we had refreshments back at the Inn. Thank you, Rick Behr and crew for such a wonderful experience. And thanks to my co-workers for such a perfect gift for my retirement.
Hot Air Balloon ! Try it – it’s great!!!
My sister and I are working on our bucket lists. This is a must !! Absolutely beautiful, wonderful experience. I’m not wonderful with heights but had absolutely no problem. Rick took us up and he has years of experience. We had a beautiful autumn day for our ride. It was so smooth and tranquil it didn’t even feel like we were moving. It should be noted – hot air ballooning is subject to Mother Nature . If the conditions are not right – your trip can be cancelled (ie rain, winds, …). We met Rick at the Boars Head Inn. Out front he released a small balloon and watched it rise and how the wind took it. We then got into his van and headed off to a take off site – evidently which way the wind is going determines where they can take off from. On the way, Rick pulled over again and let another small balloon go. When we arrived at the site – we got to see the whole process of setting up and inflating the balloon (and even helping). Truly awesome experience.
A true Charlottesville experience!
This time of year is the best for the Sunrise flight. With the cool, crisp mornings and prevailing winds blowing to the North, the flight path shows off some spectacular foliage. i could not take enough pictures. I was surprised it was not very cold, but when the pilot explained we are moving WITH the wind, so you aren’t feeling it, it made sense, but the opposite of saling, so dress for the temperature! Rick, the pilot, sure knows his stuff and is very informative. When we flew over the reservoir, he dipped the basket so it skimmed the water. Wasn’t at all scary, and very impressive flying. we were in the air about 45 minutes before we set down in a field, and every pitched in to roll up the balloon to pack it in the trailer that followed our flight. A van takes you back to the boars Head Inn. This is not a cheap outing – over $200 per person – but unforgettable and great for a special occasion for when wealthy relatives visit!
